The Child Dental Benefits Schedule: What You Should Know

Dental care is, unfortunately, not the most affordable thing for many families. Families who are already receiving government support for a number of reasons often forego dental treatment due to expense. That’s why Medicare started the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), a scheme intended to provide dental services to children who need it.

Smile Point Dental Centre is proud to provide dental services under the CDBS for children aged 2-17 years old. Below are some important things you should know about this scheme:

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule In A Nutshell

The CBDS scheme is provided by Medicare. It’s intended for families, children and carers who are already receiving other benefits, such as Family Tax Benefit A payments. The scheme provides eligible children up to $1000 each.

The money can be spent for all or part of a service, over the space of 2 calendar years. The money does not need to be spent at once. Any money not spent in the allotted time is lost and cannot be collected.

CDBS Eligibility

Eligible children for the CDBS are those between 2-17 years old who are — or whose parents, guardian, or approved care organisation — receive one of the following benefits:

  • Family Tax Benefit Part A
  • Carer Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Parenting Payment
  • Special Benefit
  • Youth Allowance
  • Support under the Veterans’ Children Education Scheme (VCES) if the child is 16 years or older
  • Support under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme if the child is 16 or older

A family of three receiving the Family Tax Benefit Part A, for example, could receive up to $3,000 — $1,000 for each child in their care. Alternatively, a teenager on Youth Allowance might be able to get $1000 for their personal dental care.

What Services Are Covered Under The CDBS?

Smile Point Dental Centre can provide the following services under the CDBS:

  • examinations
  • routine cleaning
  • repairing cracked teeth, fillings and root canals.

Unfortunately, the scheme does not cover orthodontic treatment, dental work that needs to be done in hospital, or cosmetic dental procedures.
